THE MEMORY MARCH

THE MEMORY MARCH – COMMEMORATING THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF AKTION REINHARDT

This year, during the 22 July Memory March, we will commemorate the members of Oneg Shabbat – a conspiracy group led by Emanuel Ringelblum, which collected and edited documents of Jewish life under Nazi German occupation.

The Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute together with its Partners are organising the 22 July Memory March, whose sixth edition takes place in a particular year – the 75th anniversary of Aktion Reinhardt and the Holocaust of Polish Jews by Nazi Germany. About three million Jews from German-occupied Polish lands were killed as a result of Aktion Reinhardt.

The Memory March through the streets of Warsaw has been taking place since 2012. Its goal is to pay tribute to the largest Jewish community in pre-war Europe – 300,000 Jews murdered in Nazi German extermination camp in Treblinka.

This year, during the 22 July Memory March, we will commemorate the members of Oneg Shabbat – a conspiracy group led by Emanuel Ringelblum, which collected and edited documents of Jewish life under Nazi German occupation. The Archive is currently located at the Jewish Historical Institute – one of the world’s most important research institutions dedicated to the history of Jews of Poland and Central-Eastern Europe. For the first time, we invite representatives of local authorities and institutions of culture in the cities, people from where were resettled to the Warsaw Ghetto during the German occupation. Together with the people of Warsaw, they also died a cruel death here of were murdered in the gas chambers of Treblinka during the liquidation, which began on 22 July 1942.

The March will begin at the Umschlagplatz monument, on 22 July at 7 PM, and will follow a symbolic route through Stawki, Karmelicka, Nowolipki and Andersa streets, ending at the Jewish Historical Institute building at Tłomackie. Let’s follow „the road from death to life” together, bringing back the memory of three million Jewish people – Polish citizens, inhabitants of cities and towns, our neighbours and friends.
